About the Design Academy

The Design  Academy provides crucial insights and benefits across a range of industry topics, including:

A greater understanding of the design, typographic and
illustration opportunities in Adult and Children’s
Publishing.
– A greater knowledge of the commercial book design

process.

The Design Academy provides a warm and supportive environment for eligible students. It aids a designer’s development and, once students have completed our course, they will have relevant design work for publishing in their portfolio.

In addition, carefully curated publishing foundation master classes on other areas of the industry, such as platform-building, marketing, and so on, are taught by HarperCollins experts and partners from the wider publishing industry.

This course aims to help students hone their talent and understanding of design for publishing, building on existing skillsets to allow them to develop further as a design professional.

Aimed at creatives who have a demonstrable interested in design e.g. as a graduate from a design or illustration degree or someone self-taught considering a career change.

Delivered live, this six week course will give students an in-depth understanding of the publishing process, while focussing on the necessary knowledge and practical skills required to succeed in a design career within publishing. Tasks will be set each week with the result that each student finishes the course with a new piece of design for their portfolio.

The tutors are both industry professionals with established design careers and students will be supported by mentors who are all designers themselves.

Ten places are divided into two live teaching streams, as shown below:

Five places in the Design for Adult Publishing, runs every Monday 10.00-12.00
Five places in the Design for Children’s Publishing, runs every Monday 14.00-16.00

The ten students are able to access all of the publishing foundation master classes delivered at the HarperCollins Author Academy. However, each student can only select one of the above live teaching streams to attend in person.

At the end of each course, students receive a HarperCollins Design Academy Certificate and are eligible to join the Academy’s Alumni Network; a community for underrepresented authors and designers to continue the conversation, create critique circles, and meet industry professionals after completing the course.
